A DVD documentary of the Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX) second pilot study is now available through NSIDC. From the documentation:

“The project described in this documentary was a pilot study conducted in 1972 in preparation for the AIDJEX main experiment of 1975 to 1976. The study included a main camp on drifting sea ice in the Beaufort Sea north of Alaska along with two satellite camps forming a station triangle with a 100 km side length. A detailed description of the observational program and a running account of the results can be found in the AIDJEX Bulletin series published between 1970 and the end of the project in 1978. The Bulletin is accessible in hard copy in the Roger G. Barry Resource Office for Cryospheric Studies at NSIDC. The Polar Science Center at the University of Washington maintains an AIDJEX electronic library (http://psc.apl.washington.edu/aidjex/). It includes downloadable copies of the contents of all 40 AIDJEX Bulletins, AIDJEX Operations Manuals for the Pilot Study and the Main Experiment, and other resources.”

Several hundred unique users visit the DAHLI web site each month, roughly half of the users are from North America, the rest are scattered throughout the rest of the world. We have also begun to receive requests for materials that are not publicly posted due to copyright restrictions, as well as requests to post materials that are not yet on our list. Several of the documents that are available are quite popular receiving more than 100 requests each since the beginning of the year. These include:

Silobreaker

I have been watching Silobreaker ever since it launched in beta back in 2006. It was cool back then, and it's even more interesting now, in its "official" version.

In essence, the web site provides ways to monitor and search news, through a number of specific filters or across the board, and offers data visualization tools to help understand emerging trends. I have been impressed at how well Silobreaker handles multiple types of content and provides surprisingly good analysis. Note that Silobreaker focuses exclusively on current news and events. The content comes from news, blog, transcript and multimedia sources that cover everything from the latest developments in science and technology to the gaming industry and the world’s environmental hot spots.

If all you want is news filtered by general topic, just head over to any of the search engines’ news aggregation sites. What Silobreaker does is attempt to break down the virtual “silos” of information (both within organizations and simply in our personal news gathering) to enable you to get a wider perspective on current events. It accomplishes this in several ways; first, the home page contains news snippets from around the world and several data visualization tools to help you understand the latest trends. Silobreaker also offers vertical news portals for dozens of global topics, ranging from terrorism to business mergers, neuroscience and the Middle East. There are also customized pages with information on the global hot spots related to human rights issues, natural disasters, bribery, and so on. Silobreaker also organizes specialized trend analyses related to media coverage of the US elections, avian flu and other current topics.

What Silobreaker does particularly well is provide you with visual displays of information, which enable you to spot trends or relationships that might not be initially obvious. Say, for example, you want to find out about transgenic research. Start with what Silobreaker calls the “360° search”, which looks across its indexes, including fields for entities (people, companies, locations, organizations, industries and keywords), news stories, YouTube videos, blog postings and articles.

The search results page is a bit info-dense for this Baby Boomer’s eyes, but ah... the data viz tools make my heart swoon. In my transgenics search results, I have several boxed graphics showing the relative volume of articles, blog postings, and audio or video content over the past month that mentioned the word, a map of the world highlighting areas that are particular hot-spots for transgenic research, the relative frequency of various related words (in this instance, “biotechnology” and “protein”), and even several pithy quotes from retrieved articles.

Even more intriguing is the “network” grid, which maps out relationships among concepts, entities, people and locations. The grid does in fact resemble a dynamic network, with nodes representing various concepts and lines indicating when both were written about in the context of your search. Adjust the slider bars along the top and you can focus on the people, companies or concepts of most importance in your search.

For the search on transgenics, for example, I could learn that Barcelona has been a hot spot for transgenics research, that I should remember to use “plant biotechnology” as a synonym for “transgenic”, that three major players are Monsanto, GTC Biotherapeutics and Syngenta, and that both Alzheimer’s researchers and crop scientists are looking into transgenics. All this without having to open a single document; when I moused over any of the nodes in the network, I saw the context in which the node word(s) appeared in the retrieved news items. I even have a list along the side of the grid, indicating the most common names, companies, concepts and so on within the retrieved search set.

Jack Frost is definitely nipping at our noses, and there is snow on the peaks of the Front Range! Fall is a beautiful time of year!

The Glacier Photograph Collection has doubled in size! Since 2004, we've added about 1,000 to 2,000 images per year. This year, with the help of OPS students, we've actually doubled the number of images that we had at the end of January 2008. This brings the grand total to 9,834 images online! Many thanks to all who contribute to this project including, but not limited to, the NOAA team, I-Pin, and especially Michael Russell who has spent many hours on quality control and metadata for the digital images. And of course, we want to thank our funders, the NOAA Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP), and our contractor for the project HOV Services.

Last week, we displayed various configurations for ROCS’ logo and door sign, and we asked for your opinions. Thanks so much for your input, and as soon as we make the final decision, we will let you know.

We will announce the winner and their prize on Thursday. Your suggested name could be immortalized forever within the halls of NSIDC and perhaps even beyond!

This weekend, Allaina attended the Emporia Diversity Initiative Leadership Institute, here in Denver. As stated on their web site:

“The Emporia Diversity Initiative (EDI), is a 3-year long (2006-2009), multi-partner project led by Emporia State University's (ESU) School of Library and Information Management (SLIM), to recruit and educate local minority library staff in Kansas, Colorado and Oregon. The EDI is funded with $857,754 dollars as a part of the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program Awards of 2006.”

15 students (Ph.D., MLS, and undergraduates) are participants in the EDI program. This was the 2^nd Institute, the first being held in Kansas. As one of 6 invited speakers, Allaina was honored to be asked to speak to the attendees about her experiences as a SLIM student and as an archivist here at NSIDC.

The welcome address was given by Dr. James Williams, Dean of CU Libraries. Dean Williams introduced CU as a campus active in science research and as a magnet for students who wish to pursue careers in research and science. He touched on the library’s position to support this type of research and their efforts to move forward to expand their abilities to provide support now and into the future as more and more digital collections come to the library.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Mark Winston, Assistant Chancellor and Director of the John Cotton Dana Library at Rutgers University. He spoke about Leadership and Organizational Change. He also addressed the topic of “being the only one” which inspired the audience to discuss this topic in detail in the Q & A afterwards. Dr. Winston is the author of Opportunity for Leadership: Full and Informed Participation (2008) and Leadership in the Library and Information Science Professions: Theory and Practice (2002). He is also the editor of Managing Multiculturalism and Diversity in the Library: principles and issues for administrators (1999).

As you might know, Google has entered the forum of mapping, and our favorite information specialist has a list of the cool functions Google has included in their mapping product. Read on for her tips . . . .

Uses for Google Maps
I can't remember how long ago it was that I switched my
default map searching from Mapquest to Google Maps, but it's been a long time.
Google has been improving its map search fairly regularly, but I have been so
focused on finding out how to get from here to there that I haven't noticed.
Here are a few of the ways I have been using Google Maps recently.
To find the number and locations of a type of business in an area. By pulling up the map of Washington DC and searching for "printing", and then selecting the "Copying & Duplicating Services" category, I can see how many copy shops there are within three miles of where my client is considering locating his business.
To find out what companies are located in a building. Type in the street
address, and Google Maps will show all the businesses listed in the telephone
directory for that address. Click on any of the businesses and you will see
detailed information on the business.
To see how the distribution of cosmetic surgeons in a city correlates to population density. Are most of the cosmetic surgeons in downtown Seattle or out in the suburbs? How does that compare to the distribution in San Antonio? How did I do this? Click the "My Maps" tab on the left side of the screen, then click "Browse the directory". Here you'll see an amazing collection of user-generated overlays to Google Maps -- everything from how much light pollution there is at night in a particular area to US Census Bureau population information to a little clock you can drag to any point and see what time it is at whatever location you are currently viewing -- a great tool for everyone who can't remember what time zone Colorado
is in (Mountain Time - otherwise known as the "flyover-country" time zone).
To find out more information about a particular company, without leaving
Google Maps. For each of those cosmetic surgeons that I found, I can click the "More info" link and find all kinds of other information. I can see user reviews ("From beauty to beast - beware!"), links to the surgeon's web site, information on the surgeon's educational background, board certification, years of experience, and other information. The information gathered together on each company comes from sites designed to help consumers select a business. For healthcare, that includes Vimo.com, Vitals.com and HealthGrades.com. For hotels, you may see links to reviews from Orbitz.com and TripAdvisor.com. If nothing else, there will usually be links to the Better Business Bureau and SuperPages. And you'll see the company's address and phone number, links to the company's web site, and even an image of the front of the building, if there is a Street View for the company's location.
To find out what I don't know that I want to know. One of the features of the My Maps area of Google Maps is the ability to see user-generated overlays for whatever area you are currently viewing. I am heading out to Seattle and have some free time, but I am too time-crunched [or] lazy to find out what I should see while I am there. So I pull up Seattle in Google Maps and zoom in so that I am just viewing my hotel and about 5 miles in any direction. Then I click the My Maps tab, click "Popular user-created maps" and I see the overlays for Seattle that have been created by others. I can now get pointers to what I should see for a "Seattle Mini-vacation", the best Seattle photography locations, and even "Directions to the places donating cake to the Social Justice Fund's Annual Dinner." How did we ever manage before the web?

The contest to name the library and archives is going to be on hold for a little while. We still have some tweaking to do on the name, and we will post again when things are squared away. Do keep those ideas coming! We’ve only received a couple so far and need more. We will let you know of the new deadline and any changes to the details as soon as possible.

The DAHLI project quietly continues. We’ve just sent to our contractors a set a 30 slides donated by John Hollin (INSTAAR) of his time at Wilkes Station, Antarctica, during the International Geophysical Year. We will digitize these images and after we gather the needed metadata from Dr. Hollin, add them to the DAHLI database.

The Information Center (library) and the Analog Archives have a new name! In order to ensure our long-term viability and hopefully bring in more financial support, we decided (and received approval from the various people involved) to create a single identity for both departments. Our new name is the Roger G. Barry Cryospheric Resource Center at NSIDC. This is just the first step we need to take to bring greater awareness to our historically important collections.

The Society of American Archivists 2008 annual conference was held in San Francisco on August 24th – 30th. Allaina spent 8 days attending two pre-conference workshops, presenting as part of a panel, and attending several meetings and conference sessions of interest. The workshops were both about processing and describing archives collections, building on previous workshops Allaina attended at the 2005 conference. Her goal is to use the information learned at these workshops to jump start the arrangement and description of the materials held at NSIDC, add these descriptions to the open source Archivists Toolkit software, and make the collections more accessible to interested researchers at NSIDC and elsewhere. The presentation panel (Leveraging Outreach to Further Your Goals: Tips for Small Repositories) consisted of 3 speakers. Allaina’s part was titled: Creating an Archives Web Presence at NSIDC. Archivists are always intrigued by the collection at NSIDC and the way that the materials are managed. The audience seemed quite interested in being able to access the holdings online.

Most of the sessions Allaina attended were also about creating access to the collection. They mostly revolved around the topic of creating finding aids, which are tools similar to NSIDC’s data documentation pages or catalog pages. Another session, The Reluctant Administrator, or How I Learned to Love Management, sponsored by the Lone Arrangers Round Table, was also very interesting and helpful. This was also a panel discussion that allowed attendees to share their problem solving techniques and encourage other “lone arrangers” (i.e., solo archivists) to tackle their day to day tasks that non-lone arrangers have staffs to assist with. One of the last sessions was Old Movies, New Audiences: Archival Films as Public Outreach Tools. Allaina attended this session to pick up some ideas that might be useful for the Good Days on the Trail film. In addition, she also picked up some potential grant sources for film preservation.

In her second week away from the office, Allaina trekked to Estes Park for her annual week of Archives in the Park. This is a graduate course offered by the School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) at Emporia State University. Allaina attended this course as a student and has returned every year since to assist. This was her 5th year with the program and the 10th year of the program. This year her task was to assist the curator of collections at the Estes Park Museum with a historic photograph project. The students were tasked to organize this large collection so that the curator could later weed extra copies and better manage the collection and the space it fills in their storage space. See this article for a write up about this year’s course activities.

We do hope that everyone is enjoying the fall-ish weather! I know that I love sleeping without the noise of fans trying to bring in some cooler night air.

In the last two weeks, the librarians’ office has undergone a small transformation! In other words, those piles of issues and repairs are no longer towering over Gloria’s head, threatening her with concussion and contusions. We have repaired books, researched problems, and cleaned up many of the issues. It is good to feel safe from falling stacks of paper!

We do have one request to ask of you. If you would please check the shelves in your office and at home for any of the Information Center’s books, we would sincerely appreciate it. We have ~30 missing items; some of these were last seen before we joined NSIDC. Later this week, Gloria will post a list of the missing items to the Bulletin Board. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Once again, our favorite ‘search tips’ librarian has sent us information on one of her newest finds.

SortFix, August 2008
There are lots of search engines who claim the title of “Google Killer.” Google doesn’t seem to be on its deathbed yet, and I have found what might be the ultimate “Google Enhancer.”
SortFix.com lets you type in a search query and compare the results from Google, Yahoo and the Open Directory Project. (Yes, maybe not the directory I would have chosen, but it’ll work for proof of concept.) What is noteworthy, though, is in the search results screen. In addition to the usual Google (or Yahoo or ODP) results, there are three large colored boxes at the top of the search results page. (click here to see the search result for the search “biomass (energy OR power)” If you don’t see any text in the boxes, try again using Internet Explorer.)
The left-most box shows “power words” – related words and concepts that frequently appeared in the search results. The middle box shows your current search words, with a Boolean OR indicated by a line connecting the two terms. The right-most box is for words you want to exclude from search results.
What sets SortFix apart is that you can drag and drop words among these boxes. In my search for biomass energy, for example, my Power Words included “renewable” and “wind [and] solar”. I can drag either of those Power Words from the left box to the middle box, adding these words to my query. I can also NOT any word of phrase by moving it to the right box.
Having these three boxes makes it very easy to construct complex Boolean searches without worrying about the search syntax. But that’s not all… If you change your setting to “Expert”, you also have access to two more boxes in the search results page – Dictionary and Standby. The Dictionary box is as you might expect –drag a word into that box and a short definition of the word is displayed. But the feature that almost exploded my brain was the Standby box. This is brilliant – it is a holding pen where you can put words or phrases that you don’t want to include in the current search but that you might want later. Wow. Can you imagine this function in any of the value-added online services such as Dialog, Factiva or LexisNexis?
The Expert mode adds some other nice features as well. You can add phrases to your search query, and there are two additional buttons under the middle box – [Synonyms] and [OR]. Click any of your search terms and then click the [synonyms] button, and – assuming you are using SortFix on Google search results – it will add a tilde (~) in front of the word. As we Google nerds know, that generates a search for not only the specific word but for similar concepts. For example, a search for ~children will also include results with child, kids and childhood. (Click the “synonyms” link when looking at Yahoo or ODP search results doesn’t do anything.) The default for adjacent words is a Boolean AND, but you can indicate any words you want OR’d together by highlighting the words and click the [OR] button.
The most significant problem with SortFix is that it is designed for Internet Explorer; on Firefox or Safari, you can see the search results but none of the SortFix features are functional. And, curiously, I compared the results from SortFix and Google for the identical search and found quite a few differences among the first ten results.
It appears that the best uses of this search engine are for searches where you know you will be trying a number of alternative words and phrases, and would appreciate the Standby box; when you prefer to, as SortFix says, “Start Dragging, Stop Typing”; and when you want to have a very visual tool for constructing your search logic.

On a similar note, Mark P. posted on the bulletin boards about Cuil, still another new search engine trying to rival Google, Ask.com, etc. I have read some of the comments made by librarians this month on Cuil, and they are waiting for the “cuiler” version. Of course, Mark’s post linked to results based on a search for ‘sea ice’ and the librarians searched on their names. I think Cuil does a better job on topics rather than on personal names, based on the various posts on the list serve. Page one of the Mark's results on Cuil returned seven hits from NSIDC, with photos! The librarians’ search results’ images were often not of the person they were searching for at all.

Gloria attended the Beginning Book Repair workshop presented by Amigos Library Services (hosted by BCR in Auroroa) last week. Although she knew some of the book repair techniques, she learned a lot. You can look forward to seeing more books returned to the stacks and fewer sitting on the work table in her office.

She hopes to attend future book repair workshops in order to increase her ability to keep your collection of print materials in good repair.

Searchme.com

Searchme is an intriguing new attempt to make web research more like how we look for information in (gasp!) print resources. Its search results page is insanely intuitive, highly visual and yet easy for us text-oriented folks to use. Solely in terms of user-friendliness, Searchme is one of the best search engines I’ve seen. It also does a surprisingly good job at clustering results, and it has a nice feature for easily sharing web pages with others. Note that this site is in public beta, meaning that it is not in its final version, and some features and functions may change without notice. And it has indexed “merely” one billion pages, so it’s working with a significantly smaller index than, say, Google, which hit the one-billion-page mark way back in 2000.

You will notice the differences of Searchme as soon as you type in your search query. There is no “Search” button to click to initiate the search; Searchme starts finding and categorizing results as soon as you start typing. Type the letters S U and N, for example, and small icons appear below the search box with categories such as astronomy, astrology, computer programming, stocks, global warming and so on. Searchme has started retrieving results, sorting them on the fly, and presenting you with ways to slice and dice the results. (There is also a “Search All” icon, if you want to see all the results.) Different queries will have different categories – a search for “oil shale”, for example, generates results sorted in categories for geology, business news, mining, US government, alternative vehicle fuels, and so on.

What is particularly impressive is the search results page. Think of holding a hand of cards – you see one card fully and the other cards in slices. Searchme’s search results page looks somewhat similar. In the middle of the page is an image of the first retrieved web page, with your search words highlighted. On the right is a smaller image of the next result. Drag that to the middle of the screen and the first page shuffles off to the left and a fresh page appears on the right. Double-click any image and you are taken directly to that page, either in the same window or, if you change your preferences, in a fresh window or tab.

Unlike most search engines, Searchme does not limit the number of pages from a web site displayed in search results. For example, nine out of the first ten search results from the “computer programming” stack of my “sun” search were from the Sun Microsystems web site.

Searchme also supports a page-sharing feature, called a “stack”. If you see a web page you want to save and share with others, simply drag it to the “Stacks” link in the upper right corner of the search results page. (And notice the cool animation of the page as you pick it up and drag it over to the stack.) You can build multiple stacks; each has its own name and settings. And you can directly add pages to a stack by clicking an icon and typing (or pasting) in a URL, title and description. You can share a stack with others in several ways – emailing the URL of the stack, inserting the URL in a blog entry, or sharing it in Digg, Reddit, del.icio.us, Twitter or MySpace. See http://www.searchme.com/stack/5728 for an example of a Searchme stack of pages on Sun Microsystems. Note that, while not listed in a public spot, stacks are not strictly private; anyone who has the URL can view the stack.

Searchme is also collecting stacks on less serious topics. There is a chimney stack (http://www.searchme.com/stack/5512) and a pancake stack (http://www.searchme.com/stack/551b).

My only real gripe is that, as of right now, Searchme has no help file or advanced search feature; I’m hoping that these are developed before Searchme graduates out of beta.

Is it autumn yet? As the temperatures rise, we hope that everyone is staying cool and enjoying all of the various summer activities offered in the Rockies.

If you didn’t see the announcement, AGU has decided to revert all of its journals to the online version and discontinue the print one. Here’s the announcement (posted on the bulletin board earlier this month):

The Demise of Print
No print subscriptions to AGU journals will be available after 2010. This change only applies to AGU journals and not to Eos and it will be announced to AGU members in an Eos article tomorrow (Albarède, F. (2008), The demise of print, Eos Trans. AGU, 89(28), 257). A copy of the article is available on AGU Web site at:http://www.agu.org/pubs/pdf/2008EO028_print_article.pdf.

The decision to move to online only journals was a difficult one to make and stemmed from two inescapable facts: the print product is becoming more and more only a pale replica of the electronic version and the cost of producing a printed version (and in turn print subscription prices) has escalated dramatically to a point where it will no longer be economically feasible to have a print version.

From the time AGU made the electronic journal the version of record in 2002, one of the goals was to take the journal beyond the printed page. This has led more authors to take advantage of the ability to use animations, video, and even interactive material and has also resulted in the print version being only an ersatz of the electronic one.

Another consideration is simply economic. The additional costs of producing a printed version of an AGU journal are borne only by the subscribers to that format. This pricing principle was established in fairness to those who take only the electronic version. As the number of print-only subscriptions continues to drop, there are fewer institutions over which to amortize the costs. Additionally, the production costs keep soaring - especially paper and postage. Thus, the price per subscription has been escalating rapidly.

What does this decision entail for libraries?Some changes will happen as early as next year, when AGU no longer accepts any new print subscriptions, although subscribers taking print in 2008 will be able to renew in that format in 2009. In 2010, a first round of AGU journals (to be announced in early to mid-2009) may become online-only. By 2011, all AGU journals, but not Eos, will be online-only products.

Institutions that still have print-only subscriptions to AGU journals in 2008 will be offered a free trial access to the online version later this year, as well as other incentives to encourage them to switch to electronic subscriptions. Any institution can provide desktop access to its researchers, faculty, and students for about 60% of the costs of the print subscription. If your institution currently has a mix of print and online subscriptions to AGU journals, please consider switching all of them to online-only.AGU is very much committed to remaining a leader in Earth and space science publishing. This move will ensure that costs are kept down, that only a superior product is delivered, and that AGU products are available to more users.

Gloria will include this change in the AGU journals in her assessment of the library’s current subscriptions and future purchases for next year’s budget.

We have added all of the CD-ROMs and videos to the catalog. We now have only one major format to add, microforms, which we hope to add later this year.

About 700 new glacier photographs taken by Austin Post have been added to the Glacier Photograph Collection. Our students are hard at work QCing and adding the metadata to these images. Unfortunately, we do not have access to the original negatives or prints and are limited to creating digital images from microfilmed copies. The quality of the microfilm varies and so does the resulting digitized image. Due to the enormous amount of images and the format we have to deal with, we’ve decided not to weed heavily on image quality. We will announce the updates some time in the near future (after some of the metadata is cleaned up in the database). In addition to the images, we will also be reviewing the best way to add the more detailed metadata from the Glacier Photo Index project.

Gloria attended the American Libraries Association conference June 27-June 30. The ALA is the largest and oldest library association in the world. It’s membership includes librarians in public, special (law, medical, etc.), school, academic, research, etc. libraries. As a result, the conference programs offer a wide variety of sessions and vendors.

She attended sessions covering topics such as librarians helping people in Second Life (a virtual world) to the new changes to Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) processes and cataloging the Library of Congress way. Allaina attended Collaboration in the Digital Age, a forum in the Connecting to Collections initiative sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in cooperation with Heritage Preservation. This free conference included people from 43 states, Puerto Rico and China. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Bruce Cole, Chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities, Adair Margo, Chairman, President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, Anne-Imelda Radice, Director, IMLS, Elizabeth Broun, Director, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Shirley Amore, City Librarian, Denver Public Library, and Lawrence Reger, President, Heritage Preservation provided opening and keynote remarks for the attendees. Many others provided the content for the sessions. The forum was held at the Denver Public Library, Denver Art Museum and the Colorado History Museum.

IMLS began Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action as a national initiative to raise public awareness of the importance of caring for collections held across the U.S. Collaboration in the Digital Age is the second of four forums and focuses on the needs of museums and libraries by helping them think strategically and collaboratively about digitization and digital preservation. Sessions focused on the fundamentals of digital content creation and preservation, emphasizing practical approaches to planning digital projects, increasing access to collections, enabling digital resources to serve multiple purposes, and protecting digital investments.

This past weekend was the second intensive weekend of teaching for Allaina and her colleague Shaun Boyd. The Introduction to Archives class visited the American Alpine Club library and archives and also received a tour of the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum. The AAC library has received a collection of large framed Washburn photographs. One (the “colossal” size) is currently on display in the library along with a few other artifacts donated by Washburn to the museum and library. Carl Stewart, Emergency Response coordinator for Norlin libraries, spoke to the class about disaster planning for collections. He coordinated a hand’s on experience for the students by placing a “collection” in a wading pool and pouring water over the collection. He successfully simulated a pipe breaking in the library or archives and the surprise and shock of walking in on such a problem.

Over the course of 2 hours the students were able to experience how quickly paper materials absorb water, emphasizing the need to quickly take action. Here are a few photos of the experiment. It was a slightly traumatic event for Allaina and Shaun who have both personally experienced recent water disasters – Allaina during Hurricane Katrina and Shaun as recently as the current flooding in Iowa. However, it was well worth the effort. We could speak about the smell and the feel of what happens when things get wet and also emphasize the need for acting quickly to recover items.

On the 12^th, Allaina attended a Society of American Archivists workshop in Denver. “Project Management for Archivists” provided tools geared toward archivists who generally have several projects going on at once. Although the workshop did not provide time management tools to assist with multiple projects, the ability to manage projects individually and to determine the difference between projects, programs and processes was highlighted.

Last week Allaina attended the Special Libraries Association’s annual conference in Seattle, WA. Among the sessions she attended was a very informative session – “Surviving Your Digitization Project”. This session built on the SAA workshop from the previous week even though they were not directly related. The session was presented by librarians from the Combined Arms Research Library (Ft. Leavenworth, KS) who discussed their successes in creating a digital library of their not easily accessible materials. Another, “Building Global Bridges across Science Databases”, was a panel session presented by Walter Warnick, Director of DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information, Ellen Herbst, Director of the National Technical Information Service, and a third speaker who was filling in for Gladys Cotter (Associate Biology Director for Biological Information, Biological Resources Division, USGS). This session discussed many of the reasons why federated searching of science databases benefits the world. These are mainly concepts already being discussed and presented by some folks at NSIDC so it was nice to see others finally discussing it as well. Some databases that were mentioned were:

Gloria has returned from the Great White North, i.e. Edmonton, Alberta, but it was actually quite green and beautiful. The weather was ideal, and she enjoyed all of the walking!

She attended the 22nd biennial Polar Libraries Colloquy (her first PLC!), and she hopes to attend the next one in Germany in 2010. The speakers and papers and presentations ranged from a documentary on the sea mammal diet of the inhabitants of the Chukchi people in Siberia (yes, she had to close her eyes a few times, especially when they were eating fermented whale fat and again when they killed one of the walruses) to the silent auction for items unique to polar libraries and their parent organizations. PLC was held in conjunction with the University of the Arctic’s conference, adding still another level of information sharing.

She regrets to say that she was out-bid on a couple of great books (for the NSIDC library of course).

For a little background on the PLC, the colloquies alternate between Europe and North America. The last time that Boulder hosted the event was 1988, so Allaina, Gloria, and Shelly (from INSTAAR) volunteered to host the 2012 PLC. The steering committee was very happy to accept our offer. So, for the next four years, we will be working on making it the best PLC ever.

This weekend Allaina was co-instructor for a graduate archives course for the School of Library and Information Management (Emporia State University). The Introduction to Archives course is an overview of the profession and involves lots of tours and guest speakers. This weekend the class toured the Carnegie Branch of the Boulder Public Library and also NSIDC.

NSIDC participates in the International Polar Year Publications Database (IPYPD), a collaborative project that aims to will attempt to “identify and describe all publications that result from, or that are about” the current IPY. IPYPD is also part of IPYDIS. As materials are cataloged, you may search for them online through the Arctic and Antarctic Regions (AAR) database. For more information see the about page at IPYPD.

We do hope that you had a great Memorial Day holiday, even if the weather was not exactly stellar for firing up those grills! Grilling season, however, is now officially open.

This week, Sue Olmstead with NSF will be here visiting. Allaina and Gloria will be in a meeting with her on Wed (28th), and Sue will be here and at INSTAAR on Thursday as well.

Due to back-to-back shelf shifts, you might have a little trouble finding the item or items you need. If so, please contact one of us. We should have new finding aids in place at the end of each row before the end of the week.

Last week, we announced new policies concerning renewing materials and replacing lost or damaged items. We have included the text of the new policies here, for your information.

Renewing Materials
All general circulating materials may be renewed 4 times via phone, email, or Instant Message. For further renewals, the patron must bring the items to the library. All renewals are for the same period as the initial loan. See Borrowing Materials above for loan periods for the different material types.
Replacing Lost or Damaged Materials
If a patron has lost or damaged library material, he or she is responsible for the cost of replacing or repairing the item.

We want to thank everyone who has returned library materials! We know that it is hard for some of you to let go of the books and reprints, but it is just for a short period of time. Tomorrow, we hope to have everything on the shelves and continue with the shifting of items to make more room. We will let you know when we are done, so you can run to the library and grab those books!

Congratulations to all of our graduating (now graduated) students! As an FYI, Kristin is now a temp employee for the library (not a student employee)! She will be helping us this summer until she starts classes in the fall at DU Library School.

The test scans of the Austin Post (Ice and Climate Project) USGS photograph collection on microfilm have been positive. All of the remaining microfilm reels have been received by our contractor for the digitization project. We will keep you posted as to the progress of this next phase of the Glacier Photograph Collection.

And speaking of our contractor, HOV Services representatives visited NSIDC last week. John Jacobs (R), our primary contact for the digitization projects, and John Smiraglia (L), toured the library, analog archives, and were very impressed with the tour of the server room. (Thanks to Rich for the impromptu tour!)

Well, it’s the end of the academic year, and everyone will soon be out for field work or vacation. With that in mind, we need to ask for your help. Due to Roger’s retirement and changing of offices, he is donating many of his journals, books, and reprints to the library. In order to verify that we have enough room for these items, we need to get all books, journals, etc. on the shelves or in the file drawers for a brief period of time.

We need everyone to return all library items to us by May 9th (this Friday). Gloria will check them in, shelve them, and then tally the available space. We anticipate that this will take approximately two weeks, after which period, all items will once again be available for check out. We plan on making items available for check-out on the 27th.

We realize that this is an inconvenience, and we do apologize for that. However, we need accurate information as to shelf space as soon as possible.

Please make a list of everything you will want to check out again to make it easier to track them down.

If during this time you need an item, please let us know. We will either get it from CU or online or wherever we can track it down.

Spring is still being elusive (we catch a glimpse of her here & there), and today should be one those glimpses.

Gloria has another project in the offing. She has decided that it is time to put all of the CDs, VHS tapes, etc. into the catalog. For a change, this project will not impact you as much as those from the last two years. If you know of any CDs or other media that should be in the library & its catalog, please contact her.

The DAHLI Special Collection of IGY photographs has been updated. You may view the collection at http://nsidc.org/data/glacier_photo/dahli_igy_photos.html. There are currently 2,132 images in this collection including about 100 low level aerial photographs taken by the U.S. Navy. See the “Notes” field in the photo metadata for details about these images.

A Few of My Favorite Things

I'm in the throes of my (Northern Hemisphere) spring speaking tour; by June I will have been to Washington DC, London, Oslo, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Baltimore. In the course of preparing all the presentations, I have accumulated a number of tips and sites that aren't extensive enough to fill up an InfoTips newsletter, but are useful nonetheless. So, this issue includes some of my favorites of these ah-ha!s.

In an act of faith that Yahoo! will survive its possible absorption into The Borg, otherwise known as Microsoft, I'll mention one interesting Yahoo! search tip. If you enclose your search terms in [square brackets], you will only retrieve pages that have those words in that order. Mind you, this isn't a phrase search -- those two words may be anywhere in the page, but the first term must appear before the second. So, for example, the search [subprime crisis] will retrieve pages with "subprime mortgage crisis", "subprime lending crisis" "the subprime mortgage industry is in crisis right now" and so on. It will not retrieve "there is a crisis in subprime mortgages", however.

I mentioned Technorati.com in my March 2008 InfoTip, but I had one of those epiphanies today and thought up another use for this blog-search tool. When bloggers attend a professional conference, they often about the sessions they find particularly noteworthy. In fact, they will sometimes transcribe the speaker's PowerPoint presentation along with their own thoughts. Conference organizers are now encouraging bloggers to use a standard tag to identify blog posts about the conference, so that anyone can search for blogs about that conference. What that means is, if you can identify the appropriate tag, you can search for all blogs with that conference tag, and get at least a sense of the key themes and most thought-provoking sessions. See, for example, the blog entries that were tagged with CIL2008, the agreed-upon tag for the Computers in Libraries conference.

There are only two search engines that I know of that let you search for a word that you would like to have in the search results but isn't required. Say, for example, you are looking for information on the "green banking" trend, particularly in Colorado. You definitely want the phrase "green banking" to appear in each retrieved page, and you would like to see pages that also mention Colorado ranked at the top of the search results. Note, though that you don't want to limit your search only to pages that mention Colorado; you just want to see those pages first. Live.com and Exalead.com allow you to do this. The syntax for Live.com is prefer:word, so the green banking search query would be "green banking" prefer:colorado and the syntax in Exalead is word1 OPT word2, so the green banking search query would be "green banking" OPT colorado. (Note that you must type OPT in all caps.)

The IAHS Red Books numbers 1-221 and 309 are online at http://www.cig.ensmp.fr/~iahs/. Currently the library’s collection goes through #264 (2000), and we will be purchasing any newer publications, which are applicable to our subject focus.

As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the Librarians are now available for chat or instant messaging from 7 am until 4 pm, Monday through Friday. Our user name is nsidclibrary on Yahoo IM, AIM, and Windows Live Messenger. You can get your answers faster by chatting with us!

This summer, she is teaching an Introduction to Archives course for the Emporia State University School of Library and Information Management distance program. She will be teaching the course with fellow alumni, Shaun Boyd, over 3 intensive weekends, June 6-8, 27-29, and July 18-20.

Next Tuesday, the 22nd, Allaina and Ruth will be teaching a workshop at BCR (Bibliographical Center for Research) in Aurora. The title of the workshop is “Cataloging Earth Science Data: Standards and Tools You Can Use!”

Analog Archives DU Volunteer Project

Below is a description of the project by Maura McGrath, who organized the group of DU library school students. The photos were taken by two students - Maura and Bridget.

This weekend a group of seven students (Sam Schiller, Bethany Fisher, Shannon Smith, Bridget Whittenberg, Regina Avila, Katie Thomas, and Maura McGrath) volunteered to help the National Snow and Ice Data Center with a project that has been on their to-do list for a while. Along with Allaina (their Analog Data Archivist and one of their two Librarians) and Kristin (a work-study student who is going to be a DU library student next year), we worked on the following project.

The library has a collection of large paper ice charts, about 25" x 38" or so, and a bit more than 7,000 of them that were digitized. The paper originals needed to be put in order by date and coverage area and stored in the very top drawers of our flat file cabinets.

We arrived at the library at 10:00, but before starting the project we took a tour of the library and Allaina gave us an overview of the operation. The library is in the National Snow and Ice Data Center, which is a part of the CIRES department at the University of Colorado—Boulder. They have a collection related to glaciers and other cryospheric entities and a very small budget. On our tour we had a chance to look at journals and sketches from H.F. Reid (an explorer in the 1800s) and even some archival pictures.

Most of us worked from approximately 11:00-3:30, carting the maps to the conference room, putting the maps in year order and then (because of time constraints) we each took a year in the 80s and put those in date order.

The dates on the maps ranged from 1953 to 1987 with about 200 maps per year, so we didn’t have time to get to every year. Finally we began carting all of the years back to the analog archives room. The carpooling group that I was a part of had to leave at 3:30, but Sam volunteered to stay for another hour.

Overall the project went without a hitch—we managed to get through the afternoon with only one paper cut! And I think the most trouble we had was with head rushes. I know I enjoyed the opportunity to help a library, learn about this very specialized collection, have a hands-on experience, and work with other students.

I’m so grateful to Allaina Wallace of NSIDC for proposing the idea and all the students that trekked up to Boulder to participate and make this project a success.

This past Saturday, seven University of Denver library school graduate students volunteered their time to help organize a large collection in the Analog Archives. For 6 hours, the group of students, along with Kristin (future DU library school student) and I, pulled all of the Dehn Ice Charts in order to group them by year, month and day. This collection, approximately 7,000 charts, has been digitized and most are available online. The originals now reside in the analog archives room in the very top drawers of the large flat file cabinets. Once these charts are organized, Gloria and Allaina will be able to shift some large format materials from the library into the analog archives room. This project would have been difficult to do without the help of the volunteers. We were able to get all of the charts organized by year, and 8 years are in order by month and day.

Gloria received an announcement from the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice informing us that the Bulletin of Glaciological Research is now an open access online journal, with access to all past issues. Within the next few days, Gloria will add the URL to the Electronic Journals page. The Library will no longer receive print copies of this bulletin.

You can now chat with us even when you are not in the office! For those of you that missed the posts to the bulletin board, the library now has chat capability on Yahoo IM, Windows Live im, and AIM. Just add nsidclibrary to your contact list in your IM or chat program, and when you need us, we will be there. The library will be online Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.

In order to consolidate shelf space, we are shifting the monographs and some of the oversized materials. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please ask one of us! We will update the finding aids as soon as the shifting is complete. Thank you for your patience.

The Glacier Photograph Collection has been updated with a collection of 95 panoramic photographs of Alaskan glaciers. These photographs were taken by the U.S. Navy during the IGY. You may locate them by limiting your search by date (1957) and photographer (U.S. Navy).

For the month of April, the due date for most borrowed items is July 31, 2008. You will receive an email when you borrow an item giving you the due date. We send out reminder emails on the first of the month an item is due.

We have updated the Glacier Photograph Collection. There is now a special collection page for the DAHLI IGY Glacier Photographs. This new page directs users to a special search page to locate glacier photographs taken during the International Geophysical Year (1957-58). Thanks to the work of Michael Russell, we will be adding more photographs soon. Michael has been diligently checking the quality of the digital files and ensuring the accuracy of the associated metadata. There are currently 917 images in the database. Another 1131 images are in the queue.

In addition to the IGY photographs, we have recently added a collection of images taken in Peru by Fred D. Ayres and updated the National Park Service Glacier Survey Reports (another special collection).

Reminder

The library will be closed for Spring Break on Friday.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Hope you are wearing green and staying warm. Yes, folks, we are having a St. Paddy’s day storm.

For the last two weeks, Gloria and Kristin have worked their way through each shelf of books, verifying that the books are in the correct place on the shelves. We’ve found second copies that we didn’t have in the catalog and books on the wrong shelf! Slowly, we are getting our catalog and our shelves in good order, which helps when trying to find that book that we know is there.

Beginning this week, you will be able to use Yahoo’s Instant Messenger to chat with one of us in the library. On Wednesday, Gloria will post the library’s ID to the bulletin board with instructions on adding the library to your contact list.

Coming soon! The Glacier Photograph Collection will soon double in size. Kristen has completed cutting and shipping to our CDMP contractors the large film reel of aerial glacier photographs, most taken by Austin Post. The first batches of the digital images have just been returned to us. We will begin the QC process and creating the metadata for first 5,000 of the 13,600 images on the reel this week and next. Stay tuned for more information and updates!

If anyone is interested in traveling as a group to view the Polar Regions exhibit at the Map Library on the main campus and having an official tour of the map library on campus, let us know (library@nsidc.org). We will be happy to arrange it with the Earth Sciences librarians.

No big news happening in the analog archives. Work continues on the Glacier Photograph Collection including matching the photo index to the Austin Post aerials. Our contractors are scanning the materials faster than we can keep up with the QC, but it keeps our students very busy indeed.

Allaina will be scheduling the collection assessment with Randy Silverman, Preservation Librarian for the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah. This work is funded by the grant awarded to NSIDC through the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Today’s hint: Searches are key word searches in all fields except dates. We find that the most accurate searches use just a key word or two in the title field and either the author’s last name or date of publication. In this instance, less is more.

Glacier Photograph Collection updates includes a collection of 79 images taken by Fred D. Ayres in the 1950s in Peru. Next batches to be added will be IGY glacier photographs taken by Bill Field and his team. Thanks to the NOAA team and especially to the students – Michael Russell and the students in the Message Center – who have been working diligently to QC the images and create metadata for these collections.

You will find a number of theses and dissertations on the shelf holding the recent copies of EOS (next to the new journals’ shelves). These items are those completed by Roger’s students over the years. You may borrow them for the full three month period.

This coming week, Gloria will replace the current intranet home page with an updated (and hopefully more intuitive) web page. She will announce the change on the bulletin board.

Another “coming soon” addition is “IM Your Librarian.” Gloria is working on adding Yahoo IM to the Frost Byte blog to provide you better service through instant messaging. Stay tuned for this new information access tool.

Allaina visited the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum (http://www.bwamm.org/) during their grand opening this weekend. She has plans to meet with their director of marketing to discuss possible collaborations. Even though their museum is named for Washburn, they do not hold any of his photographs in the museum or the AAC library. Allaina hopes that we might be able to display some of our Washburn photos to promote NSIDC’s historic glacier photo collection.

The American Alpine Club has an event that may be of interest to NSIDCers this Friday. “Climbatology” will feature comparative glacier photographs. See their web site for more details. (http://www.americanalpineclub.org/pages/page/155)

Work continues on the scanning of a collection of aerial photographs donated to NSIDC by Bruce Molnia and taken by Austin Post. This collection is one large reel of film containing tiny copies (less than 1”x1”) of the aerials photographs. Kristin has been meticulously cutting the images from the reel, indexing them, packaging and shipping them off to our CDMP contractor for scanning. In addition to scanning, the contractor is attempting, with our assistance, to match the Photo Index metadata to the aerial photos. This is proving to be more difficult than we hoped. Stay tuned for more news and updates as they develop.

Allaina has been asked to teach an Introduction to Archives class for the School of Library and Information Management’s current Colorado cohort. The course will be offered in the summer semester here in Denver through the Emporia State University distance program.

Last week Allaina attended the AMS/ASLI annual conference in New Orleans. As you might imagine, much of the AMS talk was about hurricanes. The ASLI conference was not so focused on the weather but more about the data about the weather and the role of libraries and data centers in managing and disseminating the data. The usual suspects were in attendance, librarians and data managers from Alaska, UCAR, NOAA, NASA, and other government associations and universities.

The Wednesday keynote address was “Divine Wind: the History and Science of Hurricanes” by Kerry Emmanuel. It was standing room only for his talk, which focused on historical aspects of hurricanes and also a bit of data collection. On Thursday, Allaina was part of a six person panel discussion titled “Discovery, Access, Preservation: Libraries’ Roles in Data Services.” It may have been more appropriate for a USO representative to have been a speaker, but given the 7 minute speaking time, there wasn’t much time to say all that we do at NSIDC.

In the Exhibit Hall, Allaina and Florence met Dr. Richard Crouthamel retired from NOAA and now executive director of the non-profit International Environmental Data Rescue Organization (IEDRO). He was wearing a t-shirt made by his granddaughter that said “Eat. Sleep. Rescue data.” Unfortunately, he didn’t have any for sale. IEDRO’s mission is to assist the scientific and educational communities by: locating and rescuing weather and other environmental data stored on perishable media; digitizing historical environmental data; ensuring the digitized data is available for operational and research applications to its host country as well as the international community of scientists.

Richard (Armstrong) and Allaina have been in contact with Dr. Crouthamel regarding a collection of about 1,000 historic glacier photographs. The collection of glass plates is currently stored at The Regional Museum in Maggiorino Borgatello, Puntas Arenas, Chile. He is attempting to negotiate the transfer of these images to NSIDC.

There are a couple of BAMS meeting issues, as well as IEDRO newsletters, in the library for anyone who might be interested.

Besides the frigid weather, not much new happened last week in the library or analog archives. Gloria is working on the intranet and internet web sites, and she expects to upload the new look this week.

She is also making plans to update the search screen on the library catalog. Stay tuned for a new look and better functionality (hopefully) the next time you log in to the catalog.

The Glacier Photograph Collection is in a constant state of updates. The latest is a new special collection of glacier survey reports from Rocky Mountain National Park completed between 1932 and 1952. Some of the earlier reports were only recently discovered in the library and will be added as soon as they are returned from the contractor. Check out the new collection of PDF files of the complete reports as well as the individual photographs from the reports: http://nsidc.org/data/glacier_photo/glacier_reports.html

The next batch of glacier photographs will be a batch of IGY photos taken by Bill Field and his team between 1957 and 1959. Some of these photos were previously added to the collection and can be located in the database by using the date range as the search criteria. The Society of American Archivists (SAA) has accepted a proposal for which Allaina is a participant. Their annual conference will be in August. The title of the presentation is “Leveraging Outreach to Further Your Goals: Tips for Small Repositories”.

Next week Allaina will be working from home on the 17^th before leaving for the Atmospheric Science Librarians International (ASLI) annual conference, held in conjunction with the American Meteorological Society annual conference, in New Orleans. She will be presenting “Data Services at the National Snow and Ice Data Center” to the ASLI group.

This is our last issue for volume 4 of Frost Byte, and boy, do we have a lot of new items here in the library. See below for a list of some of them.

We are asking everyone with an interest to review a book we currently have “on approval.” The title is Fuzzy Surfaces in GIS and Geographical Analysis : Theory, Analytical Methods, Algorithms, and Applications. The book is in the librarians’ office, so feel free to stop by and peruse it. Once you have, please give us your feedback.

The Analog Archives was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to support an assessment of the collections by a preservation consultant. As stated in our application, “The assessment will include recommendations regarding proper housing for the materials, furniture requirements, security, and environmental controls within the archives, and archives policy creation. The consultant will provide the NSIDC archivist with a written report detailing his findings, recommendations that will form the basis of future preservation implementation efforts at NSIDC.”

Allaina’s Conference Report

Persistence of Memory: Stewardship of Digital Assets

This two-day conference was held November 28 – 29 in Seattle, WA and was presented by the Northeast Document Conservation Center. The intent of the conference was to cover the “big picture” concepts in digital preservation, presenting several case studies and an overview of the current digital preservation landscape. It was presented in a lecture format with 10 faculty members presenting to an audience of over 200 attendees.

Here are some presentations of note:

The opening speaker, Liz Bishoff (Special Assistant to the Dean and Head of the Office of Sponsored Programs at CU-Boulder) was unable to attend. Her talk, “That All-Important Metadata”, was given by another faculty member. Topics covered included PREMIS, METS, and the differences between what has traditionally been done and what is now being implemented in the digital age.

Tom Clareson of PALINET - "Surveying Digital Preservation Readiness: Assessing Risks and Good Practices for Digital Collections". This talk focused on protecting the digital assets and preparing for disasters.

Robin Dale (UC – Santa Cruz) presented “Trusted Digital Repositories” covering what “trusted” means, what is a repository, many acronyms of this digital age including OAIS, principles and practice, and certification of repositories.

Kirsten Neilsen, California Digital Library, presented a case study, “Ingest in Time: Getting Content into a Repository”. (She also presented for Liz Bishoff.) This was interesting because it explained to librarians and archivists why and how digital repositories might serve their communities. This has been an issue at many of the conferences and workshops I have attended, and this session spoke well to the two groups in a common language.

The final presentation was given by Jim Gemmell, Microsoft Next Media Research Group. “MyLifeBits” was described as “an experiment in lifetime storage” and is a software system being developed by Microsoft that will allow users to capture, store, organize and retrieve “everything” about their lives in a digital format. Some actual practical uses would be for people who are the institutional memory of their organizations. Instead of searching for those materials in their office after spending many, many years creating materials, putting them in several boxes and donating them to an archives collection – instead of all of that paper -- there would only be a hard drive of materials to account for, theoretically already stored and organized. This is still in development; although, there was an interesting demo of what they’ve done to date.

Some questions and thoughts:

v Where does NSIDC fit into all of this digital asset management? where do we stand as an evolving data center – internally and externally?

v NSIDC should be presenting at these meetings as well, not just within the science data communities.

v How should I respond to questions about PREMIS and NSIDC’s role?

v Does NSIDC have a digital disaster plan?

v The time is now for the collaboration between traditional library repositories and digital data repositories.

v Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) vs. Certified Data Centers – what is the difference if there is any?

Another NEDCC Stewardship of Digital Assets workshop will be coming up next year. This two day workshop will be more of a hands on practicum to help plan for the preservation of digital assets. This workshop is being offered at three different locations in the country.

The Library was quiet last week, which enabled Gloria and her trusty student, Kristin, to correct some problems with the catalog prior to the next transfer of data to Biblioline’s Arctic and Antarctic Research database.

Also, the International Polar Year Publications Database is now available at http://www.nisc.com/ipy. Anyone may access it from the internet for free. We hope that this database will provide a vital resource for researchers, students, and the general public on the IPYs, past and present. This is also an excellent resource for publishing your IPY research results.

The Journal of Glaciology #183, v. 53 (2007) is now available on the International Glaciological Society website at http://www.igsoc.org/ and will remain available until such time as Ingenta adds it to their website.

The Glacier Photograph Collection will soon be expanding. By the end of this year, we should finish most of our backlog and will add approximately 330 more glacier photographs by the end of the year. We will also add a new Special Collection of Glacier Survey Reports from Rocky Mountain National Park (1939 – 1952). Also, in conjunction with the DAHLI project, we will add more glacier photographs taken during the IGY to the collection.

As you might have noticed, we have changed the format for Frost Byte! We’re now publishing it as a blog! We hope that you find the easier access helpful, and we are very excited about the change. Please let us know what you think about our new blogging newsletter by participating in the poll! (Top right)

As part of our participation in IPY 2007-08, we have updated our catalog records with key words used in the International Polar Year Publications Database hosted on the Biblioline web site. This database is now up and running. It is open to all, so you don’t need a user ID or password.

Also, in association with the IPY4, the DAHLI web site has also been updated. See the bibliography of digitized materials (with links to accessible materials) on the Find Literature page.

New look and a new name! The Online Glacier Photograph Database is now the Glacier Photograph Collection. The web site has been updated as well. Check it out!

Bruce Molnia (USGS) was interviewed twice about his work, particularly his use of the Glacier Photograph Collection. The first was an interview that will be utilized by the Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP) who funds the digitization of the photograph collection. They will include this interview in their annual report. The second was done at NSIDC with the help of Ryan Vashon (CIRES) for our own collection. In addition to the interview, parts of the Good Days film may also be included in the CDMP annual report.

Allaina attended three different library events over the past two weeks. October 24^th and 25^th she attended the Western Association of Map Libraries conference which was hosted by the Colorado School of Mines and held at the Denver Central Library in downtown Denver. October 29^th and 30^th she attended a Metadata Standards and Applications workshop at the BCR offices in Aurora. October 31^st she attended GSA presenting a poster she authored with Lisa Ballagh, Gloria Hicks, and Donna Scott.

Next week, Allaina will be out of the office on Tuesday the 13^th.
